No is a powerful word and as parents I feel that we need to feel confident in using it to set limits for our children, even when it means that we go against all the hype happening around us. It can be hard to stand firm, but I feel that it’s crucial so that our children learn to appreciate the true gifts in life.

Very good! I do hear sometimes about how a large family can be so detrimental to a mom’s personality. But I have found that actually, it has helped me in my own character development, to say “no” to things that aren’t wrong, but just aren’t a good idea right this minute. Even good things like teaching CCD or volunteer work can get in the way of higher goals like spending quiet time with individual kids…or with dad. I think there is more prudence in moms of bigger families – they have no choice but to prioritize!

    Hi Jen!
I’m not sure if its my computer or the podcast, but the sound goes in and out and I can’t get the show to play smoothly. Hopefully its just my computer so others can hear your show :)

Works great now! I liked what you said at the end about being confident in our parenting choices. That can be hard sometimes. It can be tempting to see what other parents are doing- regarding anything- and begin to question, have I made the right choice? Once I get back into my “little world” at home with Clint & the boys, I realize that yes, our choices are the right ones for us. But, when you’re out there with the neighbors or whoever it might be, its easy to doubt. Someone always seems to have it together more or be doing better in one way or another. Prayer usually helps to push those thoughts away, but it isn’t easy.

I feel very lucky that in my cirle of friends, I feel like most parents are pretty good at the word “no”, I recently overheard a conversation between two other moms as they were “one uping” each other on who had better limits with their kids. I smiled thinking, “I think its become cool to say no”. That would be great! Also, I really like what you said about balance — I think that’s also true when explaining why we are saying no. Sometimes an explaination is ok — and sometimes you have to say “its just no”.
Thanks for what you do Jen.
