Today was shopping day. I HATE shopping day! The job is so huge and takes up so much time! There’s GOT to be a better method for grocery shopping. Think about how many times we touch our groceries before we actually use them;

1. Take them off the shelf and put them into the basket
2. Take them out of the basket and put them onto the check out
3. Put them into bags
4. Put the bags into the cart
5. Take bags from cart and put them into the car
6. Take bags out of car and load into kitchen
7. Unload each item from the bag and put it where it belongs

It’s not until the 8th time that you touch an item that you actually use it! Insanity! Try doing that with HUNDREDS of items every two weeks.

Today I went to Trader Joes, Henry’s and Vons. It went something like this;

Trader Joes-45 minutes of shopping and looking for the stuffed fish named Pokey, so that Luke-Xavier could earn a lollypop. Carts full-1, Items purchases-63, $ spent-$179.13

Henry’s-45 minutes of shopping, tasting and removing items from Luke-Xavier’s hands. Carts full-1, Items purchased-many, $ spent-$104.25

Vons-Over 1 hour of shopping. I left Luke-Xavier at home to nap. Carts full-2, $ spent-$391.91

Normally I would go to the commissary, but I am trying to cut down on driving and figured that with coupons and shopping sales, I could break even and still hit Vons. Costco has also been a staple for me, but am skipping it this time around.

So, to recap- Today I spent nearly 3 hours and over $600 on grocery shopping for the next 2 weeks! Hate It! And, I’ve already started the list of forgotten or still needed items. After reviewing my items and my receipts I thought I’d share some of the fun grocery facts with you.

Loaves of bread purchased-7
Bags of frozen “pasta medley”-3
Diapers-1 case, size 5 (really need to get the potty-training going!)
Goodnights-2 sizes and 2 kinds
Cheeses-5 kinds
Gallons of milk-6 (this will have to be supplemented, but there is only so much storage space)
Cans of soup-15
Rolls of TP-12
Rolls of Paper towels-8
Bottles of wine-0 (DANG! Forgot the wine! Putting it on the “still needed list!”)
Bottles of beer-6 (enough to get me through until I buy the wine ;-)
Boxes of cereal-6
Boxes of hot cereal pkgs-4
Boxes of crackers-6
Cookies-2 kinds
Bagels-3 kinds
Cream cheese-2 kinds
Edemame-6 bags
Steaks-6 (kids can share!)
Cantalope-6
Bananas-3 bunches
Applesauce-2 jars
Tortillas-2 pkgs of 30

Alright, I’ll spare you the entire list, but that’s an idea of what is gone through.

As soon as I figure out a better way to shop, I’ll be sure to share.

I hope you each had a great day and Clay, when you read this do me a favor and DON’T add up the totals!

Good night~

*I wonder who does Rod Stewart’s shopping*

    I despise grocery shopping too.

WOW, that is a lot of money sent, but then your family is much larger. I should shop less often, but I find i go at least once a week with the usual extra quick run for something forgotten or needed.

I’m sure Rod Stewart likes to grocery shop because HE doesn’t HAVE TO.

You are so-o-o funny Jen. From the size of Rod Stewart I don’t think he eats much.

I dislike to grocery shop as well and there is just the two of us.

    Love to all

You have summed up (extremely well) why I hate grocery shopping too. I complain about it, then feel guilty about complaining about it. I have tried a million different scenarios- once a week, twice a month, different stores, a big shop, a daily shop…nothing makes it easier. Good luck trying, though!

LOL! Yeah, the grocery shop task. Never ends. I had to go tonight when I realized that the hubby is going on a hike with the teen tomorrow…and needed trail snacks. I was thinking I was done for this week.

We bought a $75 used refrigerator for the extra milk, so we could stash more than 6 gallons at a time. And extra eggs and juice and bread. Maybe that’s helpful?

Hi Jen, this is my first post. I enjoying reading your blog. I heard about you from my son’s school. I remember hearing about a lady that wass pregnant and had 8 kids. :) I grew up in a large family, as did you. (we were 10 kids, 2 parents). This blog made me realize how our eating habits have changed. There is no way my parents had room to store so much food hence the flour and maiz for homemade tortillas, beans, rice, pasta, soups…food staples that that required extra preparation. I take it you have a garage refridgerator or freezer? That is on my to do list – purchase upright freezer for garage. But first, clean up garage so there is room for it! Thanks for sharing it was fun to read. I don’t mind going grocery shopping. But I do hate going when I HAVE to because we run out of milk. Believe it or not, we still haven’t figgered out how to unfreeze milk and have it ready when needed. My little family of three is aw of you!

mom, you forgot hot cereal… ;-)

  7. Comment by Gellie:

Ok, I obviously haven’t been to your blog in AGES!!! I apologize. I came because you mentioned it in your mood category on myspace. And Kateri, she said 4 boxes of hot cereal!!!!! ;) WOW!!! dod mom used to buy that much for us when we were all at home? I got stressed the other day at just the thought of going to VONS AND Trader Joe’s and they are only a few blocks from each other and home. You must be exhausted after that. I love you and commend you for the amount of stuff you undertake everyday. I hope I will see you soon!

Wow! With all those groceries, I would sure be looking into online purchase and delivery! Unless you live in a remote area, this would sure save on time and hassle. Let someone else round up all these goodies for you and bringum to you! With the amount involved here, I am sure you would not even have to pay a delivery fee. Check it out!

I can relate to you about the grocery shopping being a major event. I go every two weeks too. And I have to do lots of planning, making list and menus. I think Rod Stewart probably has a chef do the grocery shopping for him. He has enough money to have someone serve and pamper him…and I’m sure he enjoy’s it. :) I would too. You take care. Iris
