An Eye For Detail

February 8, 2011

It’s less and less often that the table gets set and all the food put into pretty bowls and platters and placed upon the table to everyone sitting around, waiting to eat. More so, the food gets cooked and the kiddos line up in the kitchen and I put the food on their plates, cafeteria style, and they take it to the table, say Grace and eat. But Gabi (6 yrs) LOVES the “Spread Out” dinner-meaning the table is set, etc.

So tonight, she took it upon herself to set the table and make sure we would all sit down and eat. She thought about what is pretty and what is functional and I LOVE that! She went to the front yard, picked the flowers, placed them in the center of the fruit bowl and placed the bowl in the middle of the table. I LOVE it when my girls do these kinds of things. It tells me that they’ve seen me do these sorts of things and enjoyed it and want to duplicate it. I have 2 other daughters who have really picked up this particular gift and display it whenever they are able.

So, tonight, dinner will be served in pretty bowls, with everyone sitting around, passing the food. And all because a 6 yr old decided it was important.

Beautiful!

Last night I got home from a meeting to this note. I love everything about it-the monster, the misspelled word. And I especially love that he took the initiative to ask for me to wake him up so that he could finish his homework!

The Luxuries of Youth

February 3, 2011

It’s 6:30 on a school morning. The kids are in various stages of readiness for the day. I just walked into the bathroom to find one of my kiddos sitting on the floor of the shower, letting the hot water wash over them while they sat…just sat.

To be that carefree again! To not have the worry of time in your head. To not know the list of 25 things that need to get done, giving each task just over a minute to be completed. To not think of anything but how good it feels to sit in a hot shower.

There’s such luxury in being young. I don’t discount what does go through kiddos’ heads and that they genuinely feel worry, but there’s truly something we loose once we are the ones who are solely in charge of our schedule and time.

To youth!

Sharing Sweet Words From One of My Teens

Every once in awhile your kids will say something that makes you walk a little taller. And when they do, you’ve gotta grab that praise and tuck it away to draw from in all those times that they’re speaking regular teenage-”You’re such a dumb adult” language.

Yesterday my 14 yr old turned to me and said, “All my friends love coming to our house because you’re just such a good cook”.

Yes!
